Wales showing the way

Wales is a difficult group of the World Cup qualifying to negotiate, but in a more recent, must have a reasonable chance. Ted Robbins, would be happy, by Brian Glanville writes.

Ted Robbins would be proud of in Wales. Ted who? The founder, inspiration and moving spirit of Welsh football, 34 years as the so-called secretary of the Football Association of Wales, but in fact, infinitely more. E 'was also the fact, at the same time, the leading international British team were still unknown, an essential part of a successful manager. "Put your feet under!" He says of his new players, often developed through the sullen resistance of the great English clubs, the slums of the league, and even the Welsh amateur sides, "I will take your dad!"

What pride and joy Robbins, whose career began in Wales before the Great War and ran on after the other, would have had, from the Welsh made his way through the quarter-finals of the World in 1958 Sweden Cup, only to lose 1-0 to the Brazilians Pelé terrible and everybody quarter-finals in Gothenburg, where I was fortunate to be present. A game, they might even have won had their giant star with a center-forward, Jean-Charles, so formidable in the air, was not absent, thrown out of office in the previous playoff by a cynical side Hungarian.

The great irony is that in Wales, the most successful of the four British sides that participated in this tournament, you should not have been there. Were eliminated in the qualifying round, but when Afro-Asian teams refused to play in Israel, FIFA needs a lot of substitution and distribution. Uruguay is out of the draw and the winners proud to twice the previous World Cup haughtily rejected the offer. While Wales, who went to Sweden under the control of benign and insightful Jimmy Murphy, once a Welsh international wing half, by then assistant Matt Busby at Manchester United, which will run from Busby seriously injured after the terrible Munich air crash in February of that year the team was devastated America.

Under Robbins, it was said that when even a third division player drew the Welsh jersey he was a hero for an afternoon. It was a classic event in which Wales was deprived of key players in English clubs selfish, does not want to lose on a Saturday when they were themselves to play League football.

In 1930, Wales the team scheduled to play, then the powerful Scottish Rangers stadium Ibrox Park. Lambs to the slaughter, it seemed. For the Welsh team of Robbins was much less obscure players. At least there was the great captain and a center half Fred Keenor. There were three amateurs, two men of non-League clubs, and four players from the third to the north and south divisions. But in just five minutes before Bamford center volleyed Wales ahead! Scottish fans have been waiting for the avalanche of goals that would punish rudeness, but it was almost half the time when the battles recovered. And such is the score stayed until the bitter end. Like Robbins, who would pay the players of his own pocket because the funds were low, was known to observe, "Wales has never stumble!"

And this season we have seen a renaissance Welsh. A team that went to make water for a long time after an impressive period in the context of their former striker Mark Hughes, staggered one failure to another. Suddenly, they were in their European qualifying group, although the actual score was unfortunately out of reach, they beat Switzerland in their territory Montenegro, Bulgaria, certainly part demoralized, only 600 of his followers disillusioned bother to look for 1-0 in Sofia.

And how they came to take England to a draw at Wembley in the same group! Only a little shocking lack virgin Robert Earnshaw near the end as England pressed awkwardly 1-0. I was particularly sad for Earnshaw, because I had actually seen his debut in Wales in Cardiff against a powerful German team, which despite its small size, he turned inside out, possibly marking the the only goal of the game.

This is administered by the Welsh pleaded Hughes's muscular presence in front of Big John Hartson, a lone striker adept at keeping the ball and lethal with his head close to the target. New South Wales is a great platform from Gareth Bale of Tottenham, ably early central midfielder Aaron Ramsey, fortunately recovered from the terrible damage he caused a huge rear center Ryan Shawcross Stoke that kept him out for almost a year, in addition to Craig Bellamy, one of the finest British landing time, unfortunately, hang out the game at Wembley, or who knows what would have happened? Now the maintenance of their former left wing Gary Speed, Welsh is a difficult group for World Cup qualifying negotiate, but the recent form, must have a reasonable chance. Ted Robbins, would have been happy.
