We averted the Lockout, so it's NFL Football again! The preseason is upon us now and many bettors skip the golden opportunities given to them because they'd rather sit back and watch.
The preseason is NOT always a preview into the real season. It should be treated differently and as its own entity. It can be easy money for you if you play it seriously with all its tips and uniqueness.
Here are my 6 keys to successful NFL Preseason betting:
1) Have several Books. There are significant differences in the many books available to you - especially in the preseason. Take advantage of this - don't become a victim of it! Always look for the best line possible (you should be doing this for all seasons and all sports). The more books you have, the more different opportunities you'll find, along with more chances of winning. A single point or half-point can and does make the difference between winning and losing.
2) Leave your heart out of this. Too many good opportunities become losers because we love a certain team, player, coach, team color, mascot, cheerleader - you name it! Concentrate on the game and the winning/losing factors. Play the game with your brain!
3) Don't be a "gotta-have-action" kinda bettor. A lesson learned in handicapping should be applied here: you don't have to play EVERY game. Don't play because it's your favorite team.. don't play because it's the only game in a particular time frame, or section of the country, or division, or on TV, or on Monday night etc.
4) Use your head when it comes to public teams. You MIGHT make good money by betting AGAINST a really popular team like the Cowboys, Packers, or Raiders - all of whom have a huge fan base. Play your spots carefully, and watch the odds because the oddsmakers are brilliant at what they do.
5) Study the coaches. Just like the Trainers in Horse Racing, a coach might be looking at the preseason as a warmup, a physical workout only and are not interested in the Win/Loss results. Maybe they simply want to protect their key players from injury. Maybe they want to protect ALL their starters. Learn whether or not they play their starters and how long they like to keep them in the game.
6) Study the Quarterbacks. Learn the rotations for the teams. Will the star start? Will he stay in the game? When does the 2nd or 3rd string QB take over? Keep in mind that some teams 2nd string QB's can be better than some of the other teams' starters.
There you have it, my 6 tips to betting smartly on the NFL Preseason games. Now, go make some money!
