Every year, Fred Mueller compiles a sports list, but unlike popular pre-season picks or a glamorous hot sheet recruit, nobody envies him this task. Some years the list is longer than the others, but Mueller said there is no reason for any child should be in it.
The list of boys who died playing or practicing football, kids whose body temperature rises so high and so fast under the summer sun that their brains could keep up, I could adjust their nuclei, and the boys are dead.
When something is preventable., Mueller said, shaking his head. These children might be alive today.
Five young athletes from 11 to 17 years, died of heat stroke in 2006. The trend was downwards. The last time there were more than five years was 1972 when he was seven. In five of the last 16 years, there were none. However, Mueller said, there were 31 in 1995, and each of them could have been avoided.
Seven other players died last year of heart-related deaths, which may or night, there is no correlation between the heat or fatigue. And we do not know the number of children who had heatstroke, Mueller said.
The practice of summer about to turn a large gear, Mueller said it was time to remember these children, and to keep in mind how heat-related deaths can be prevented.
